ITC General Functions

Information System Development and Deployment

System development and deployment is a major function of the ITC. It maintains a farm of servers for the University web page, web mail, database and other information systems utilized as transaction processing and management information systems. The following systems are maintained by the center:

  • MMSU Web Page
  • MMSU Alumni Information System: Phase 1
  • ILARRDEC Web Page
  • Personnel Information System (PIS): Phase 2
  • Extension Directorate Web Page
  • PaySlip Generation System

In addition, the following information systems are also hosted by the Center:

  • Research and Development Directorate Web Page
  • ASRC Web Page
  • CHED Zonal Research Center Web Page

At present, the Center is working on the following information systems:

  • Online Enlistment System
  • MMSU Alumni Information System: Phase 2
  • Personnel Information System: Phase 2
  • MMSU Virtual Learning Environment System

The ITC through the Information Systems Management conducts the following activities:

  • Provides standard and university wide data definitions, administration and database management.
  • Provide programming capabilities and talents to the different colleges, units and offices in the development of information system to improve processes and transaction.
  • Assist in the deployment of in-house, off-shore or outsourced developed information system.
  • Set standard for the design, documentation, development and testing of information systems to be utilized by the University.

Provision of Training and Offering of ICT Short Courses

The ITC assists in the conduct of computer related seminars, trainings and conferences sponsored by the University and partner organizations. Aside from this, the ITC in coordination with the ICT Group of Mariano Marcos State University offers IT Summer Classes and Course annually. At the moment the ICT Group of MMSU is composed of more than 30 faculty and staff whose task and interest focused on the utilization and application of computer and IT related equipment.

The ICT short courses include the following: AutoCAD, Design Pro, Network Administration, PC Productivity Tools, Visual Basic Programming, Web Page Development, Java Programming, Open Source DBMS, IT Training Needs Assesment, GIS and Remote Sensing, Computer Wizkids, PC Basic Troubleshooting and Maintenance.

The ITC conducts the following activities:

  • Prepares and submits proposals for short-term computer training and workshops along:- Computer Literacy

         - Advance Office Automation

         - Programming

         - Assist the different offices on information technology related activities

         - Provides the consultative services related to information technology.

  • Indentify computer faculty members to handle the short term courses and recommends their designation as trainers to the University President.
  • Prepares the flyers and information campaign materials for the promotion of the short term courses.
  • Facilitates and conduct of the short term trainings.

The ITC provides computer equipment and facilitates trainings requested by the various colleges, units and offices provided the request is approved by the University President. Outside entities and partners that have funding support may also avail of the ITC facilities in accordance with the existing University Policies and Guidelines on Rentals.

Provision of Centralized Computer Laboratory Utilization

The ITC prepares and arranges computer laboratory schedules in coordination with the concerned colleges of units users. It monitors the offering of computer subjects that require laboratory classes and research activities which are guided by laboratory guidelines and regulations for proper computer, IT equipment and laboratory utilization.

At present, the Center operates seven computer laboratory rooms. Seven including an Internet Room are located at the University Library and one laboratory at the Mangasep Building. Each of this laboratory rooms has 20 computer units except the Internet Room having 15 units. Two laboratory rooms house 40 newly purchased computer units. Twenty old computers replaced by the newly purchased were relocated at the University High School for the use of the Science High School students specially for programming subjects.

The ITC conducts the following activities:

  • Prepares and arranges schedules of computer subjects in coordination with the different colleges concerned.
  • Monitors curricular offerings of computer subjects of the different colleges and units.
  • Establish guidelines and operational procedures on computer laboratory utilization.
  • Identifies software both licensed and open source to be installed in the computer laboratory rooms.
  • Regulates the use and utilization of IT equipment at the ITC equipment at the ITC in accordance with the existing University Guidelines on Equipment Rentals.

Network and Connectivity Management Services

The ITC hosts the internet connection of the University via a Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) with 1:1 Mbps bandwidth. The connection provides internet access to the various colleges, units and offices of the university. At present, the University Library System Building, College af Agriculture and Forestry and Ferdinand E Marcos Hall (Administration Building) are connected through local area network (LAN) over wide area network (WAN) using fiber optic. The R&D unit of the University was also connected to the FEM hall through fiber optic.

Other colleges such as the College of Engineering, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business Economics and Accountancy, University Training Center availed of the wireless connection provided by the ITC.

The College of Arts and Sciences and College of Business Economics and Accountancy have been installed with DSL Connection (3.5 Mbps) as their internet access point.

The Center maintains 5 servers for the web (1), database (1), mail (1) and proxy (2).

The ITC regulates the following:

  • Provides assistance to requesting offices or colleges on desktop publishing operation such as generation of programs and certificates, and other jobs which require the use of computer-based method of presenting information such as text graphics and sounds with emphasis on interactivity.
  • Provides security of the servers including the data and information stored therein.
  • Provides schemes for the filtering of the four types of information to avoid network traffic and to reduce misuse of web information.

However, if a site is essential or needed in the conduct of instruction, research, extension and production, the site may be opened within a specific period. The maximum number of days however is five. To avail of this service, the following shall be followed:

  1. The user must accomplish a form (ITC Form 8) indicating the URL of the site, duration and the reasons such request. The request must be recommended by the concerned dean, head of units or chief of office and approved by the Director of ITC.
  2. The user needs to wait within 24 hours after the approal of the request due to propagation time required by the server.
  3. The site will be terminated automatically after the specified duration.
  4. If there is a need for an extension on the use of the use of, a separate request shall be required.

Repair and Maintenance Services

To harness and maximize the utilization of the ICT equipment and peripherals, the Center provides repair and maintenance services to the various colleges, units and offices. The center has two personnel involved in the repair and maintenence activities such as:

  • Conducts routine check ups and maintenance of computer  units in the ITS and other requesting offices.
  • ITC conducts regular check ups, inspections on all its equipment and facilities on a regular basis (weekly, monthly and per semester).
  • The center employs one full-time computer technician who takes charge of trouble shooting, repairs and maintenance including software installation and upgrading of computer accessories. The technician reports directly to the ITC Director.
  • Aside from the inspections conducted at the center, a yearly inventory of the physical properties (equipment/accessories).
